A big advantage of owning a home fitness gym is that you can exercise at home without having to go to a club. If you are uncomfortable exercising with other people you can workout in private, at home. Before buying your home gym some things need to be taken into account in order to buy the one that is right for you.
Things to Take into Consideration
- do you have enough room in your home? Make sure you have enough space as home fitness gyms are bulky. You should also make sure that where you intend it to go has a firm floor.
- What is your budget? Home fitness gyms can vary from about $500 for a small basic gym to more than $5000 for a comprehensive, multi-gym.
- Which do you prefer? A free weight based system or one that uses cables, rods or built-in weights for resistance?
Advantages and Disadvantages of Home Fitness Gyms
With a home gym you can, of course, work out in private in your own home, the gym is always available and you won’t have to wait until someone else finishes before you can do your training. Your gym will always be available and, once it is paid for, there won’t be any gym fees to pay. These are considerable advantages but take into account the disadvantages too. Initially some home gyms can be very difficult to set up and they are going to take up a substantial space in your home. It may be easier to stay motivated at a gym, among other people or with a trainer than at home!
Choosing a Home Fitness Gym
The most important consideration, in our opinion, is how well made the unit is. Don’t be tempted by cheap, poorly constructed gyms that are not going to give you a good workout or last very long.. Over time this won’t be money saving. Look for a gym that is well made, preferable using 11 or 12 gauge steel tubing. Heavy duty steel tubing and welded joints, in preference to bolts, are found in the better quality gyms. You should get at least a 3 year warranty on moving parts. Some of the more expensive home gyms have lifetime warranties.
Once you have seen a good quality gym that is within your budget make sure that is can be adjusted easily and is easy to use. Changing the resistance can be awkward on some gyms so try to find one that makes this easier. You can easily be put off from working out if this is hard to do or takes too long. Home fitness gyms should be comfortable with seats that are padded well and can be cleaned easily. This is also for safety reasons as you need good padding on leg presses and seats, and solid durable handgrips to prevent injury and blisters.
Conclusion
If you are buying a total home gym don’t rush out and buy the first one you see. Find out all you can about how it works and possibly try it out at the store or a local gym. Take your time as this is a quite large investment of your time and money and you don’t want to make a rash decision.
