Weight can indicate if someone is healthy or not. But weight is also not the most important. Doctors commonly use body mass index (BMI) to measure a patient’s weight against their size. BMI is a calculation of weight vs body height. Studies have shown that a BMI between 18 to 25 is healthy. But the calculation is not perfect. Someone who is very muscular could have a BMI greater than 25. A BMI over 26 would classify them as overweight.
BMI is also a bad indicator for kids under 16 years old. At a young age, instead of using BMI, doctors should factor in the person’sage and likelihood for growth. Body shape can also be a way to determine of good health. Doctors look at waist measurements because they know that “apple-shaped” people who carry additional weight around their waist are at larger health risk. These “apple-shaped” individuals can be at risk for weight-related conditions like heart disease. Make sure to measure your waistline. If your waistline is greater than 35 inches, you face an increased risk of detrimental health problems like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Paying attention to your waistline helps you to avoid unhealthy eating habits and increase mobility.
Another good health indicator is the skin. A heavy tan, oddly shaped moles and/or freckles probably indicates skin problems. Sun exposure can wrinkle the skin and drive up the risk of skin cancer. Always use sunscreen and get a dermatologist’s opinion about any spots and moles.
When cleaning your teeth, check your spit for blood. If there is blood, your gums help. Gums that bleed are a sign of vitamin deficiencies and poor oral health. Gum disease may also lead to cardiovascular issues. Blood on your dental floss is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis.Gum disease is reversible and preventable. Your gums need thorough removal of plaque, better daily oral hygiene practices and a good diet.
Dental problems are much more serious than just bad breath. Gingivitis has been linked to premature birth, diabetes heart disease, and stroke. Women who have preterm deliveries are more likely to have more severe gum conditions than women with normal deliveries. People with gum problems and tooth decay are almost twice as likely to die of heart attacks and almost three times more likely to have a stroke.
The condition of your lips are another indicator of health. If they are chapped and dry, it could signal to you that you are dehydrated, which is not a healthy state for your body. Dehydration can cause headaches and fatigue, as well as sap the moisture from your skin making it look dry.
Your fingernails are another thing to watch out for. Healthy fingernails and toenails are colorless, strong and smooth. If your nails are brittle and yellow, have ridges, have white spots and crumble, then these are signs that your nails are not healthy.
Nail problems can indicate viral, fungal, and/or yeast infections. Nail problems may also show abnormal levels of oxygen in the blood, kidney disease, psoriasis, thyroid disease, a vitamin deficiency and/or malnutrition.
