1. Common Mistake: Failing to set a goal. Do you have a definite goal in mind when you exercise? Having a clear goal is critical for exercise and weight loss success.Keeping a record of your progress in a journal can help you recognize your improvements, encourage you to keep going and help ensure that you reach your ultimate goal.
2. Common Misconception: No Pain, No Gain. Pain is your body’s way of letting you know something is wrong. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. When you go beyond exercise and testing yourself, you will encounter physical discomfort and need to overcome it. An example of this would be training for a marathon. It is important that you have the “base training” before getting into the advance training. The base training will help condition your body for more intensive training. Learn to recognize your body’s signals. Are you out of breath from exercising hard or could you be having a heart attack. Exercise is needed for optimum health. Even though it’s normal to have some soreness after exercising, it is important to take it slow and let your muscles recuperate between workouts. Those just starting an exercise program may encounter these two common problems. If you are in pain and continue to work out, you may cause long-lasting damage to muscles, tendons and ligaments unless you allow sufficient time for rest and healing. You could end up experiencing chronic pain leading to an inability to exercise.
If you wake up the next morning after you exercised and can barely drag your aching body out of bed because everything hurts, you are going to be less motivated to exercise at all. Chronic pain can definitely put an end to your exercise program.
3. Common Mistake: Sacrificing Quality for Quantity. When you are ready to increase the number of reps of a particular exercise, and strengthen the corresponding muscles, instead of forcing yourself to do a little more each time try decreasing the number of reps in a set but increase the number of sets. You can also cut your usual number of reps in half but add more sets. You won’t feel as tired and you’ll strengthen your fast-twitch muscles.
4. Common Myth: Women who weight train get big muscles. When a woman weight trains, she is burning fat, strengthening and toning muscle, and increasing her metabolism – not building mass. Women’s bodies do not make a sufficient amount of testosterone to develop to build the big muscles that men do.
5. Common Mistake: Spending too much time where you don’t really need it. Pay more attention to your weaker areas and less on what you already do well. This will help areas of weakness and strength to be more balanced. For example, if you have more upper body strength than lower body strength, try limiting your work on this area to one day a week.
