Dr. Dre, a long-standing icon in rap culture and the man who introduced G-funk, or gangsta funk, to the world in the early 1990s, is at long last getting ready to release his highly anticipated third and (supposedly) final album, Detox, before closing his career as an artist and focusing his energies on producing the works of the various artists signed under his record label, Aftermath.
Dr. Dre is unique in the music industry and that he is a star whose flame did not burn away but rather spread to include many young up-and-coming artists in the music business. Best known for his almost ruthless representations of gang life on the West Coast, Detox seemed to be intended to show the many sides of Dre. From the moment of its conception to the moment of its production Detox was destined to be different from any album he had previously created. A montage of selections from some of the biggest names in music, Detox features guest appearances by Eminem, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Fifty Cent, Papoose, Knoc-turn’al and Guvner, as well as new artists Bishop Lamont and Slim the Mobster, whom Dre portrayed in his interview with Big Boy’s Power 106 radio show in Los Angeles as up and coming talent who will soon be making a name for themselves in the music industry.
In addition to personal performances by these artists Detox will feature music composed by Timbaland, part of the hip-hop group Timbaland and Magoo whose works have help to blur the lines between many of music’s major genres and prove that music can be enjoyed without having to be classified.
Despite its ever-changing release date (rumors of its public release began as far back as 2004, but the album has since continuously failed to live up to its creator’s perfectionist standards), it is now rumored to have come from Dr. Dre’s own lips that Detox will be released in September of 2007.
